Why I Write as Idyll Wilder

Names have a way of shaping the stories we tell.

For years I wrote under my given name, Shari Wilder. 

When it came time to create a dedicated home for my fiction,

 I realized I wanted a name that reflected the kind of stories I hope to write.

The word idyll comes from the Greek eidyllion, meaning "a little picture" 

or "a short pastoral poem." Over time it came to describe quiet places, 

peaceful landscapes, and moments of simple beauty. 

I wanted a name that held both gentleness and mystery. 

There is another reason the name feels especially at home with me. 

In Turkish, İdil is a given name, and idil is also associated with the

 pastoral and poetic tradition of the idyll. I love that the name 

I chose for my fiction has a second life in a language and culture

 I have been drawn toward. The connection was unexpected, 

but it made the name feel less like something I had invented 

and more like something I had found.

Wilder is my own surname, one I've chosen to keep. 

It reminds me that even the quietest places can still be untamed.

Together, Idyll Wilder felt like the right home for the stories I want to tell.
